A New Iconic Journey Awaits

The Outer Banks offers some of the darkest coastal skies on the East Coast — paired with iconic lighthouses, endless shorelines, and dynamic Atlantic horizons.

Rather than moving from place to place, we stay grounded in one carefully selected location—allowing us to respond to weather, tides, cloud cover, and celestial conditions as they unfold.

ICONS of the Outer Banks is a 5 Nights - 6 Days  immersive photography workshop focused on night skies, coastal light, and creative decision-making in the field. Operating from a shared oceanfront home base, this experience blends hands-on instruction, flexible shooting windows, and intentional time to photograph under the best possible conditions.

🆕  What We’ll Be Photographing

This workshop is centered on night sky photography, supported by sunrise, sunset, and long-exposure coastal work — all set against some of the most iconic landscapes on the East Coast.

Subjects may include:

  • Star-filled night skies over the Atlantic
  • Milky Way photography (weather and conditions permitting)
  • Moon-free nightscapes during optimal celestial windows
  • Iconic Outer Banks lighthouses, photographed under both night skies and coastal light
  • Sunrise and sunset seascapes
  • Long-exposure water and cloud movement
  • Coastal dunes, shorelines, and natural textures

We’ll use planning tools and real-time conditions to place ourselves in the best possible scenarios for both night and early-morning light, allowing flexibility to adapt to weather, tides, and celestial alignment.

Iconic Coastal Foregrounds & Changing Shorelines

The Outer Banks is defined by a constantly shifting coastline—where land, sea, and sky are always in motion. Over the course of the workshop, we’ll photograph a range of iconic coastal foregrounds chosen for their visual impact, atmosphere, and alignment with night skies and coastal light.

Locations may include

  • Historic coastal beacons and lighthouse silhouettes
  • Long piers and classic maritime structures extending into the Atlantic
  • Remote beaches and dune systems shaped by wind and tide
  • Weathered coastal remains and transitional structures, reflecting the evolving nature of the Outer Banks
  • Natural shoreline elements that anchor night sky and long-exposure compositions

Each location is selected based on real-time conditions, including weather, light quality, tides, and celestial alignment, allowing us to remain flexible and place ourselves in the strongest possible photographic scenarios.

Specific shooting locations are shared during pre-trip planning and refined on site to ensure the best experience for the group.

We’ll photograph iconic elevated coastal homes perched at the edge of the Atlantic — including structures that have become legendary along this ever-changing shoreline.

Due to the dynamic nature of barrier island environments, specific structures may vary year to year — but our focus will remain on powerful coastal architecture, historic lighthouses, and compelling Atlantic compositions under optimal night sky conditions.

From sunrise color to midday textures, this coastline offers limitless compositions at every turn.

Unwind together with poolside relaxation,  lunches with ocean views, and leisurely strolls through the colorful shops and streets of Nags Head and other locations nearby.

“Staying right in the action made the whole trip unforgettable.” - ICON GUEST

Daily Rhythm & Flow

This workshop follows a flexible, light-driven rhythm rather than a rigid itinerary.

Expect a flow that may include:

  • Evening and night photography sessions
  • Pre-dawn Milky Way opportunities, conditions permitting
  • Early-morning sunrise shoots
  • Midday rest, review, or optional instruction
  • Group discussions and image feedback as desired

Because night sky photography often means operating on a night-shift mindset, daytime hours are intentionally kept flexible. We may photograph through sunset and blue hour in the evening, rest during the day, then head out again in the early morning hours for Milky Way and sunrise sessions.

Midday downtime can be used to rest, review images, enjoy the oceanfront home base, or explore the area at your own pace.

This flexible approach allows us to adapt to weather, light, and celestial conditions while keeping the experience relaxed, intentional, and sustainable.

Instruction & Learning Approach

Instruction during ICONS of the Outer Banks is hands-on and field-based, with support tailored to each participant’s experience level.

    Topics may include:

    • Camera setup and settings for night sky photography
    • Composition and foreground selection
    • Long-exposure techniques
    • Exposure blending and stacking concepts
    • Focus techniques for low-light environments
    • Planning around celestial conditions and light quality
    • Creative decision-making in dynamic conditions

Optional workflow and post-processing discussions may be offered based on group interest. Instruction emphasizes understanding and confidence over technical overload.

Private Theater Room for Group Tutorials & Image Reviews
Our dedicated theater-style media room offers the perfect setting for optional editing walkthroughs, image critiques, and focused group instruction in a comfortable, distraction-free environment.
