Out here, your only neighbors are the bears themselves

Built for photographers who want wild stories and warm beds.
Rustic comfort in the wild
Every cabin warm, private, and steps from the bears’ world.
There's no such thing as closer
The river runs red with spawning salmon — flashing like sparks in clear water. A massive brown bear charges, jaws snapping, water exploding in silver. Another bear lunges in from the bank. You’re here — lens raised, heart pounding — no crowds, no fences, no platform lines. This is not a tour. It’s your private backstage pass to the greatest bear show on Earth.

A Brand New Lodge
One of the Last Private Places in Katmai

In all of Alaska, very few places offer the chance to live inside the wild heart of Katmai’s bear country.
Katmai National Park & Preserve spans more than four million acres of untamed rivers, salmon-rich streams, and legendary bear habitat — but almost all of it is protected public land with zero private development allowed.

We'll fly you into your basecamp deep in Katmai wilderness
Enjoy Rustic Luxuries and comfort after your full day in the field.
Only A handful of rare, privately held properties— exist only because they predate modern park boundaries or were protected under historic Native land claims. These spots are incredibly rare and nearly impossible to access today.
Why This Matters For You
It means our brand-new Lodge isn’t just near the bears — it’s inside the best bear country on Earth.
Unlike day-tour crowds who fly in for a few short hours, or temporary camps that pop up and pack down, our permanent, private lodge is your true base camp. You wake up here. You drink your morning coffee here. And you step straight into the bears’ world — no long flights, no lines, no platforms packed with tourists.

How Rare Is This Opportunity?
Today, there are only a handful of private lodges with this kind of legal, permanent access inside Katmai National Preserve. They can be counted on one hand — and all of them are booked years in advance by those who know just how special this opportunity is.

The Backstage Pass Few Ever Get
You’re not just getting front row. You’re not just getting backstage. You’re staying where others can’t and on stage!
We’re honored to call this place home — and proud to share it with just a few guests at a time.
Step into Alaska’s wild heart with a once-in-a-lifetime bear photography experience. Staying with us, you don’t just watch — you live where the giants roam.
Built in 2024, fully hosted, and welcoming only a handful of guests at a time, this is your exclusive backstage pass to the iconic fishing bears of Katmai and beyond.

Why Our Location Wins: The Ultimate Edge
Most bear tours fly you in for a few hours — we live here for days. Our lodge sits inside the prime bear habitat: salmon-packed streams, tidal flats, and secret rivers where bears gather in huge numbers to fish and teach cubs.
🧭 Why We Get More Time — and More Variety — with the Bears
Twice the Time. Triple the Moments. Unlimited Possibilities.
While other workshops either sleep in remote tent camps or fly in daily from King Salmon, we stay comfortably inside the park at a private wilderness lodge, allowing us to launch directly to wherever the bear action is best each day.
We're not tied to a single river or camp.
Instead, we fly to multiple prime bear-viewing locations, following the salmon runs and adjusting for light, weather, and bear activity — something most tours can’t do.
That means:
- 🕓 2–3× more time in the field
- ✈️ Fly daily to where the salmon — and bears — are
- 🧭 Explore a variety of remote locations, not just one camp
- ✅ Maximize flexibility, access, and photographic opportunity
Here, the bears come to us — not the other way around.

“Iconic Shot: Checked Off. Back to the Real Show”
📍 Brooks Falls? Yeah — No Sweat. Now Backstage.
Just 13 minutes from your lodge — iconic shots and private river access in one trip.
Brooks Falls is the world-famous bear stage — where massive brown bears stand tall in rushing water, jaws wide, leaping salmon caught mid-air. It’s on every serious wildlife photographer’s bucket list for a reason.
The catch? Most people spend two to three hours just flying in from King Salmon, then wait in lines on packed platforms, shoulder-to-shoulder for a glimpse of the action.
Your advantage? Our private lodge is positioned just a 13-minute floatplane hop away — easy, fast, stress-free. Get your iconic Brooks Falls bear shot without burning a whole day flying in from town.
Note: The peak salmon run timing can vary year to year. If it’s on when you’re here, we’ll go get the shot. If not, we pivot fast and head where the action is.
Here’s the best part: when others fly home, you fly back to your exclusive rivers and hidden streams — your own private bear theater, no crowds, no noise, just wild bears doing what they do best.
This is the best of both worlds:
- The legendary Brooks Falls image every bear photographer wants.
- The intimate, once-in-a-lifetime backstage pass no day-tour can match.
- Ability to pivot to where the action is
Katmai bear photography, done right. No long waits. No fly-out fatigue. Just more time behind the lens, where you belong.
Once you’ve nailed the legendary leap shot, head back to our private river systems for scenes no boardwalk can match.
Prime bear season. Limited seats
Closer than front row — You’re on Stage
No Charter Chaos
Our Floatplanes Are In‑House!

In-House Floatplanes = More Access, More Flexibility, More Bears
With ICONS of Katmai, the floatplane fleet is part of the lodge — not chartered through third parties. That means priority flight access, the flexibility to chase the bears wherever they go, and zero dependence on over‑booked schedules. On average, our guests spend 70% less flight time than rival tours, which means more time shooting and less time in the air.
At our ICON Wilderness Lodge inside Katmai, we don’t rely on outside charters or third-party operators to reach remote bear-viewing locations — we own and operate our own floatplanes. That means every day of your experience is built around one thing: getting you where the action is.
Because our aircraft and pilots are based on-site at the lodge ( not flying in from town or waiting on weather windows), we can:
- Adjust on the fly based on where the bears and salmon are most active
- Fly early, stay longer, and return late — no strict charter schedules here
- Reach exclusive or under-the-radar creeks where other tours can’t or won’t go
- Prioritize photographers with the best light, angles, and behavior windows
Our floatplanes aren’t just transportation — they’re part of the adventure. Every seat is a window seat, and every takeoff is a step deeper into the Alaskan wilderness.
Bear Experience Comparison
this entire experience from start to finish is truly unmatched

Not all bear trips are created equal. Some spend hours flying back and forth which limits time with the bears. Others pack visitors onto crowded boardwalks or seasonal gravel bars with little comfort and exposure to the elements
This scorecard shows you what really matters — more time with bears, less time in planes, maximum comfort, and real shot opportunities.

Bear Experience Key Notes🔹 King Salmon Fly-Out ( SCORE 6/10 ) 🔹 Brooks Lodge ( SCORE 7/10 ) 🔹🔹 Remote Tent Camp ( SCORE 8/10 ) 🔹🔹 Coastal Lodge ( SCORE 8 /10 ) 🔹🔹🔹 ICONS Private Lodge ( SCORE 10/10 ) |
What the
“Bear Experience Score”
means for you
- 1–5: Basic access, limited time with bears, lots of travel time, low comfort.
- 6–7: Good bears but logistics cut your shooting hours or you fight crowds.
- 8–9: Excellent access, good comfort or wilderness immersion, minor compromises.
- 10: The best of everything — maximum time with bears, minimal daily travel, total comfort, privacy, and variety.
What “Avg Daily Flight Time” means:
- This is the typical time you’ll spend each day flying to and from your actual bear viewing spots — not your flight from Anchorage to King Salmon.
- More flight time = less golden light and fewer shots when bears are most active.
With ICONS, you’re already there — step off the porch and you’re in bear country. No long fly-outs. No boardwalk lines. Just you, the bears, and the freedom to shoot all day, every day.

“Ryan believes great photography starts with an unforgettable experience — that’s why every detail here goes beyond just the shot, giving you front-row access few ever see.”
What You’ll Experience
Mornings and evenings in the world’s best bear spots — from Brooks Falls platforms to hidden riverside vantage points. Local guides and pro instructors keep you in the right place for epic action shots, cub moments, and powerful portraits.
This isn’t a day tour — this is living inside the bear’s world.

Why ICONS of Katmai Stands Apart
🧠 Why ICONS of Katmai Stands Apart
✅ The Only Remote Lodge Inside the Park — Closer = More Time with Bears
We stay in the action, not outside it. As the only lodge based inside Katmai National Park during prime season, we average 70% less flight time to reach world-class bear activity. That means more time behind the lens — and less time in the air.
✅ Private Lodge Access During Peak Fishing Week
Our exclusive dates land during the absolute peak of the sockeye salmon run — when bear behavior is most dramatic and photogenic. No competing groups. No split attention. Just you, nature, and the shot of a lifetime.
✅ Small Group = Hands-On Photo Growth
With limited spots and a high mentor-to-guest ratio, this isn’t just a photo tour — it’s a deep-dive learning experience. From field techniques to image review, we’re by your side to level up your photography.
✅ No Charter Chaos — Floatplanes Are In-House
While others depend on external flight companies, our floatplanes are part of the lodge. That means priority access, more flexibility, and no risk of delays from overbooked charters.
✅ Image Review + Professional Feedback Built-In
We bake in daily image reviews and editing guidance, so you're not just coming home with incredible memories — you're coming home a stronger photographer.
📅 Prime Timing — Rare Access
We schedule this trip during a narrow, peak window when the sockeye salmon blaze bright red in Funnel Creek and Moraine Creek — and the brown bears are laser-focused on fishing. These fleeting weeks offer unmatched chances to photograph classic bear-and-salmon interactions in stunning light and vivid color. Many workshops miss this timing — we design around it.
WILDERNESS IMMERSION

📍Prime Location, Unmatched Access
Tucked deep inside Katmai National Park, Our ICONS Home Wilderness Lodge gives you fast access to some of Alaska’s most iconic bear photography locations — often within 15 to 20 minutes by air. Our guests average 70% less flight time, meaning more time in the field and less time in the air. You’ll visit world-renowned salmon runs, hidden fishing spots, and remote river systems where brown bears rule the wilderness.
The vast road-less expanse you’ll explore is untouched paradise
Rustic Comfort in True Wilderness

Our lodge was built fresh in 2024 — warm cabins, chef-prepared meals, drying rooms for gear, and hosts who handle everything. You’re not roughing it in a tent camp — you’re warm, well-fed, and fully immersed in wild Alaska.
Ethical, Safe, Responsible

We take your safety — and the bears’ well-being — seriously. Learn how to read bear behavior, keep a respectful distance, and create award-worthy images without ever disturbing the natural flow.
“I’d dreamed of photographing fishing bears forever — this was better than any dream. Intimate, ethical, and the shots? Unreal.
— Workshop Guest
